Gionkita, Japan Sister School Visit

November 3, 2017

Last week, we were delighted to host 14 students and their teacher from Gionkita, our sister school in Hiroshima, Japan! The Gionkita students were at Poppy for the entire week and were hosted by an awesome group of Poppy students who acted as their buddies for the week. The Gionkita students spent part of their week attending classes with their Poppy buddies, but also had an opportunity to participate in a number of hands-on activities organized by Poppy Staff members. The Gionkita students made ceramic pinch pots in Art with Mr. Sandquist, made cookies in Foods with Mrs. Fast, created cool Poppy souvenirs on the 3-D printers and laser engraver with Mr. McGivor, and participated in a class discussion with Ms. Marcanato’s History class. The Gionkita students also took part in an intramural soccer game at lunch against a team of Poppy students, made Metis pouches with one of our district Aboriginal staff, and also spent some time experiencing pumpkin carving with some of our own Poppy students. As well, our Japanese visitors were also treated to a couple of great musical performances from our Poppy Choir as part of our Welcoming and Farewell Ceremony! All in all it was a great week and our visitors thoroughly enjoyed their experience at Poppy! A huge thanks to our Poppy students who acted as buddies throughout the week!  You can get a great sense of their week at Poppy in the short video found at the link below:
