What a wonderful weekend to be the Principal of DW Poppy Secondary. On Friday evening we not only celebrated an amazing performance of “Sister Act”, but we also recognized Michael Roberds, who was a Poppy Graduate. Michael Roberds was a member of the first graduating class of D.W. Poppy Secondary in 1982. He often spoke of his passion for being involved in the school’s drama department an after graduation, continued his love of performing through various venues, from local theaters to the small screen and even the big screen. His most notable performance was playing “Uncle Fester” on the TV series The New Addams Family, a role he loved and which he performed with a cast and crew that became his second family. The Roberds family have created a memorial bursary in Michael’s name. Two one thousand dollar scholarships were presented to Rhys MacCarthy and Maeggan Palliyaguru for their outstanding dedication to the Musical Theatre Academy. Two of the cast members of the Addams Family movie flew in from California and presented the scholarships and gave many wise words to our cast members about the importance of the Arts. This was an emotional evening and a true celebration of our Musical Theatre Program. I was fortunate to see the closing night on Saturday, and it was another amazing evening with thank-yous and tributes. A huge congratulations to: The efforts of our new Musical Theatre Director James Howard, who has stepped into our academy with both feet and has done a spectacular job, former Director and now Counsellor Amber Blount, Musical Director Mr. Ablitt, and Technical and Set Director Wayne Loewen have paved the way for many years of successful productions. Thanks to Stephanie Rivera for her work as an Assistant Director, our guest Artist in Residence- Ray Dencer and Steve Penner for his dedication in the Pit Orchestra. Many congrats to you all.
Congratulations to Prit Paul Johal for his second Gold medal performance at the BC High School Wrestling Championships this past weekend. Prit Paul was the first BC Champion in Langley School District’s History last year and successfully defended his title this year. Parmjot Sidhu medaled for the second year in a row and finished with Bronze Medal. Well done Coach Munsie!
Two DWP Poppy students, Aydan Johnson and Treyvane Hunter were part of a Langley District Lacrosse Team that finished first in BC at the BC High School Lacrosse Championships this weekend.
Also a big congrats to Mr. Furse and the DW Poppy Phyzics Team who participated in the Physics Olympics at UBC this weekend. This is a full day event that involves creativity, critical thinking, team work and creativity. The results have not yet been released, but Mr. Furse indicated that they worked well and triumphed over some adversity as one of the projects broke part way into the competition.
Such a diverse weekend of celebration in our fabulous school.
